Surrounded by the Eastern Alps St. Michael is located at 596 m above sea level in the heart of Styria at the estuary of the Liesing in the river Mur. The municipality has a surface area of 56 km² and consists of the districts Brunn, Greith, Liesingtal, Vorderlainsach, Hinterlainsach, Jassing and St. Michael. Many discoveries prove that Celts as well as Illyrians and Romans have settled in this area. In the 19th century iron production was of major importance for the community.

Amongst those in the know, the River Mur Cycling Trail is rated as one of the most beautiful river cycling trails in the Alps. Its course - gently downhill past many culinary destinations - means that it is a truly leisurely cycling trail. It starts in the Hohe Tauern National Park and accompanies the River Mur right into Styrian Wine and Spa Country.
This scenic arc makes an original, varied, and enjoyable impression from spring until autumn. Gentle hills, mountain pastures, lakes and riverscapes are your companion for unadulterated enjoyment of nature at the source of the Mur in Lungau in the state of Salzburg and further into northwestern Styria. The variety of culinary experiences ranges from typical home cooking to the finest the forest, meadows and rivers have to offer.Leoben, the Montanist and university town in the heart of Styria and the old market town of Bruck an der Mur with its enchanting old town invite you take a pleasant break and enjoy the culture.
The mid altitude community offers a wide variety of hiking trails and climbing tours such as the hike to the Gleinalm.
