Hafning has a surface area of 76 km² and is located amongst the mountains between Trofaiach and Vordernberg at 685 m above sea level. The community consists of the catastral communities Laintal, Treffning, Rötz, Krumpen and Hafning. The major part of the municipality is covered by forests and the surrounding mountains such as the Eisenerzer Reichenstein of the Hochturm mark the boundaries of the municipality.
The name “Hafning” originates from the first settlers who were potters, which means “Hafner” in German. Archeological discoveries shown in the museum of Trofaiach prove this theory. Due to the communities’ proximity to the former centres of the iron industry, the local farmers had no problems with selling their products.
Hafning is known mainly as the starting point of many hiking trails through the Vordernberg valley and the surrounding mountains. But the village too is well worth a visit, as it is one of the places where one can still experience authentic Styrian village life.
The cross-country net of the Krumpen cross-country ski run is located at the edge of the Eisenerzer Alps and provides special services in a breathtaking environment. The mid-altitude trail leads through enchanting forests along the Krumpen creek to the Krumpen ditch. The trail has a length of 2.5 kilometres and is equipped with snow canons and flood lights. Furthermore there are practicing facilities for biathletes and a children’s slope.
Starting point for hiking trails
Innumerous well marked walking and hiking trails start in and around Hafning. The variety of the routes of the region Hochschwab-South makes it hard to decide which route to take because all of them have their special characteristics and are therefore unique. You definitely shouldn’t miss Frauenmauer-Cave, Griesmauer and Leobnermauer. The ascent to the Eisenerzer Reichenstein (2.165 m), departing from the catered mountain hut at Hirnalm along the Krumpenalm is a very rewarding hike in the nature protection area around lake Krumpen and Krumpen waterfall. The Grete-Klinger-via ferrata across the Vordernberger Mauer requires a secure step. Hebenstreit alp, Thalerkogel and the Hiaslegg are further worthwile hiking destinations.
Moreover, the chair lift to the Polster that will take you up to about 2000 metres in about 10 minutes is recommendable. The view of the surrounding mountain scenery and the Erzberg from the top station is impressive. In winter Hafning with its cross-country skiing trail and the near skiing area Präbichl turn into a winter wonder land.
The polster is also well known amongst paragliders.
