Styrian Iron Road

The registered association “Styrian Eisenstrasse” is a non profit organisation based in the heart of Styria and was founded in 1987. It has 18 member municipalities, the largest are Leoben, Trofaiach and Eisenerz (which is the city next to the Erzberg / “Iron Mountain”). The region has 1300 years of mining history, hosting nowadays the only working Central European iron mine (Erzberg / “Iron mountain”). The focus of the organisation is the preservation of the mining heritage (monuments, museums, traditions etc.) and the development of the region.

The Styrian Eisenstrasse is a fascinating region rich in history, fantastic art treasures, appealing landscapes and culinaric highlights and attracts people from all over the world.

Ancient customs

Miners who were proud of their ancient customs and traditions have had a massive impact on the life of the people of the Styrian Eisenstrasse and the enclosed regions for centuries. Especially the surroundings of the Styrian Erzberg, and the city of Eisenerz were the center of numerous festive occasions in honor of the patron of the miners, Saint Barbara.

Lots of sights and museums along the Styrian Eisenstrasse such as the montanistic museum of Gusswerk, the showmine Styrian Eisenstrasse, the Ore Hiking Trail or the brewery museum of Göss still preserve the knowledge about these customs and traditions, and the end of the year festivities honoring Saint Barbara still take place.
